Celebrating Fire Hydrants

Celebrating the Fire Hydrant in all its variations and locations.
"He also serves who only stands and waits." John Milton

If you would like to add a picture of a fire hydrant from your area, send it to MundaneFotos@yahoo.com
or post a picture on your blog and leave me a comment. If you don't mind, please include the location of the fire hydrant: city, state/province, country. I reserve the right to crop the photos if needed. Photos of fire hydrants actually used to fight a fire will be given a preference (details appreciated). Photos that include firefighters are even better.

Three Are Better Than One

Three stand pipes in ChicagoThree stand pipes in Chicago. Are they still worried about Mrs. O'Leary's cow?

03/11/2006 Correction. I spoke with a fire fighter. These are not stand pipes and they are not fire hydrants. They are sort of the opposite. You put water into these instead of taking water out. These probably connect to the sprinkler system inside this building. If too many sprinkler heads go off in a fire, there may not be enough water from the normal source to supply all the sprinkler heads. Fire fighters can pump more water into the system through these.

If I've still got this wrong, I hope a fire fighter or someone who knows will post a correction.
